A serious observation.
Rugy is very violent physical game - Yet the fans at the games do not have to be seperated and whilst a bit bawdy relate to each other with good humour.
Soccer is a much less physical game - Those Fans World wide have to be kept apart and seem to be quite nasty, Even local games I remember reading about a poor chap at a Brighton match who was hit in the head by a Dart.
So is there a correlation between a Violent Game and passive fans - and a Passive Game and Violent Fans

Possibly Whistler.
There is an old Maxim "Rugby is a game for Hooligans played by Gentlemen, but Football is a Game for Gentlemen played by Hooligans".
It may be socio-economic factors that account for this, but my own empirical observations would confirm your theory.

Football has always been very physical game, re Chopper Harris, norman bites your legs, etc, & rugby has been a pint & a punch up game, re the British Lions in the 70's when at the end of the game against the Sprinkboks, i think, each lion on the call of the captain punched the nearest sprinkbok to them.....Fact. Footballers now adays, are over paid faireys.

Fact. Footballers now adays, are over paid faireys. Now there is very little in this statement that I can argue with

Hockey - violent (physical + fighting) on the ice; fans - kind of aggressive, but less violent than hooligans Boxing - violent by nature; fans - same as hockey, more or less Handball - violent (extremely physical*); fans - loud, friendly crowd Ping-pong - furious, but peaceful; fans - hmmmm ...
I don't think the theory carries very far. Hooligans are what gives football ("soccer" to some) a bad rep. There are hooligans in hockey as well, so I don't think it has much to do with the sport. But sure, it's interesting that they seem to flock to football like they do. But that has more to do with colours, territory, history, status etc. IMO.
*) One American Football'er once commented that you would have to be crazy to play that sport without any protection. ;D

On the tribal aspect of Football I have to say that I, and the Blue side of Glasgow will be delighted that we have just beaten Celtic 2 - 0 and at Parkhead too, the first time we have beaten our Old Enemy at their home ground for quite a few years and opening up the possibility of winning the Scots Premier again! ;D ;D ;D
Perhaps it is a class matter. Although the old lines are blurring, by and large Rugby Union is still more of a Middle Class sport, Football (Soccer) Working Class, at least as far as spectators who attend the matches rather than watching on TV etc. Now that Rugby Union is professional and attracts more money and far more Television coverage etc, will its supporter base widen and perhaps conduct deteriorate amongst its fans? I sincerely hope not!

The conclusion of this particular league is no longer foregone

Dum spiro, spero
Well, at least I know my Brethren will all be in a good mood tomorrow. We are all one team who all wear blue, and we are indeed a grand old team ;D
BTW, the Auld Enemy is England - though I've noticed some Rangers supporters actually wearing England tops.
