Soon-to-be-Bro. Playto, it *is*, indeed, that simple. It really and truly is. It's just that there are those who, for motivations all their own, want it to be complicated. And so long as they are accommodated, it will be. I am in hopes, though, that this more cynical view of reality does not in any way dampen your enthusiasm. With what little I've seen of you, so far, I think you will make a fine addition to the craft

Im not yet a mason in this life, but have been in previous lives. It's just a matter of time. ;D and thanks Btw, I dont agree with you that things are the way they are because of selfish motivations, I do think it is bigger than that, but surely it can be resolved.

My personal advice would be to not let it worry you, we don't know in this life if the various obediences/GL's will get to the point where they work together, and to be honest it isn't really that important. There is more than enough room in the world for the various organisations. Besides, human nature being what it is even if a Grand Lodge of the Universe incorporating all the GL's in the world were to be created, you could guarantee that within 3 months there would be a 'breakaway' GL formed from the people who were unhappy with the way the new Grand Lodge of the Universe operated, for any myriad of reasons. Masonic ecumenism isn't likely to happen.

Bro Penfold is correct, people naturally like to have diversity, be that in Religion , Politics or Freemasonry. There won't be Masonic Ecumenism any more than Christian Ecumenism amongst the various Churches.
All I would say is do as much research as you can to ensure that the Type of Freemasonry that you join is suited to you and you do not join the wrong Branch and then regret it as you find you become increasingly out of step and disillusioned with the Ethos and Purpose of that GL and its Lodges.

Things always seem simpler on the outside. Where am I? And, Playto, *I* would not call the motivation "selfish". Quite honestly, I don't understand what the motivation is, only that it's their own. I would I could explain it better than that but, quite frankly, I don't understand it. Unfortunately, I experience something of a mental block when I deal with someone who is being hysterical, unreasonable and illogical. My mind goes utterly blank. And I respond logically and reasonably, which doesn't seem to help as I usually just get more hysteria in response (the reference, made earlier, to asking the inquisitor not to burn fellow Christians at the stake comes to mind very quickly in these encounters). I apologize that I cannot described the motivations better than that. However, I will say that, when I do encounter them, the overriding emotion is fear. As I said, I don't understand but that is the emotion I often encounter. And it has, of late, triggered a sort of compassion in me, which I suppose is progress. For I understand that people do and say the strangest things when they are frightened. Sometimes, they even hurt others. Not withstanding my continued inability to understand this motivation, I continue to believe this *is* quite simple. But is as simply made difficult. However, I also agree this is something that should not worry you. Though I also agree you should do as much research as you can to be sure you get into the lodge that best suits you.

This issue bespeaks much of what is wrong in the world. I find it humorous and disturbing that we are in the practice of excommunication.

Care to elaborate brand? I've not seen any mention of 'excommunication' on this thread, however, please tell me of any membership organisation that you are aware of that does not reserve the right to expel or remove membership?

I know you're asking Bro. Brandt but . . . just because it's done elsewhere doesn't make it right.

We are either Freemasons or we are not. Maybe it is my sense of justice and right that gets in the way of petty politics. A Mason from a "regular" Grand Lodge is not hurting anyone by what he does outside of that Grand Lodge. What is the point of all of this. We claim the brotherhood of all manking under the all seeing eye of Deity but seem to work overtime to separate people. Seems counter productive to me.

All organisations have rules, it is implicit in your requesting of membership that you will abide by those rules. If one finds those rules offensive or so odious that you cannot live with them, then removing yourself from those restrictions is surely the only way open to your conscience?
Here is a question I have yet to have answered, and I apologise for singling out an individual, Bro Lauderdale is now a co-mason, as such he is no longer welcome in a UGLE lodge as a masonic visitor because of the rules laid out by UGLE, not his GL. Does his GL permit him to visit GLFMW lodges? Or RGLE lodges? Genuine question. Do any of you know the answer? Brandt, are you in male-craft freemasonry or one of the other GL's? What rules does your GL proscribe in respect of visiting lodges belonging to other jurisdictions?
I perhaps would feel less bitter about this subject and with the depressing frequency it comes up if the discussion was more even handed than it has been in the past, after all, male craft GL's arent the only ones to impose inter-visitation regulations, are they?
Lets remember that tolerance and understanding thing that gets mentioned in our ritual once or twice.....
