Bro Theron,
Once again you raise interesting points - in commenting let us ignore Gender.
We have a duty to ourselves,
(b) to our family,
(c) to our friends,
(d) to our employers
(e), to our community,
(c)to our country
(f) and to our g-d.
etc
etc
The only Duty we have is to ourselves - as we work on our ashlar the light we create reflects on all the other aspects we may care to List.
In your Country Robert A Lee's idea of duty to His country was different to Abraham Lincoln's - Perhaps we should consider duty to our belief in what is right rather than Country.
Our Community - is it our duty to defend it regardless of the way it behaves - or again is it our duty to defend what is right.
Problem is what is right today might be wrong tomorrow.
What was the duty of the employees of Pacific Gas and Electric Company prior to 1993
You mention duty to ones forbearers
The more I track back the behaviour of mine the more I shudder - Being of Heinz 57 Blood - in every direction I see badness - that can only be excused by the fact they were people of the time- If I look at the forbearers of my Maori Mates I see no difference.
So, what is that nature of duty? It seems it is the obligation that a man owes g-d for the blessings of life, to his parents for giving him life and raising him, to the community for helping raise and educates him, to others as he GIVES the obligation, (wife, church, and lodge).
The above statement is broad and full of debatable fish hooks...
Focus your duty on perfecting your self and your relationship with whom you may consider your creator - That is all you need to concentrate on - from there all aspects of our Freemasonry fall simply in to place
