There seems to be increasing acceptance that the 4 lodges broke away from their Grand Lodge and formed a new GL based on allegiance to the Hanoverian king in London - as compared with Jacobite tendencies of many other lodges at the time. mastermason.com/kenilworth29/Research/18thCenturyPolitics.htmlThese 4 lodges were later declared "time immemorial" to avoid the problem of which GL chartered them. One lodge was only 5 years old. The new GL did not know much about Masonry and in 1719 the Grand Master asked the brethren to contribute any manuscripts concerning Masonry. At that time various Irish Masons burned documents so that the Grand Lodge of London and Westminster should not have the information. A few years later the new GL announced the loss of the genuine secrets with an appropriate cover story. The new GL sent out no search parties to recover the genuine secrets.

There are a few odd facts that are not supported by the 926 date. Athelsatn did not take York until 927 but York was the stronghold of England from this early period and indeed Operative Masons were a powerful group.
It is this power of the Builders that seems to get overlooked during Masonic discussions.
Why was London the centre of the Universe Masonically Speaking in 1717, well obviously the King and then the Operative masons again. The great Fire of 1666 handed the Builders, [in which I include the Operatives and the financiers and the Kings men and Court] the wealth and the power to dictate what happened next. Hence through self interest and in order to hold the reigns of power I suggest non operatives were admitted into Masonry - freemasonry. I have no proof but to anyone whi has been involved in building contracts it makes a lt of sense.
