I was looking at a poster last month, it had a list of different masonic orders etc, and there was one by the name of the 'August order of light' I am quite curious about this order, I know you have to submit a paper on an esoteric subject to be considered for membership. I was just wondering if anybody knows anything about the order and what it is like to be a member, I am very curious.

Their first degree ritual is on the web. It is pleasing to see that they take seriously the investigation of the hidden mysteries of nature and science - the much ignored work of the FC.
Such esoteric orders usually lose most of their technical skills after the demise of the founders.

The August Order of Light, founded in 1881 by Dr. Maurice Vidal Portman, was also called the Mysteries of Perfection of Sikha (Apex) and of the Ekata (Unity).
It is more about Eastern mysticism, with teachings from the Hindu mysticism, Theosophy and the Royal Oriental Order of Sat B’hai, kind of Jewish Cabala I believe.
It could be interesting. It is the only side order based on Eastern philosophy.

The August Order of Light was originally based in Bradford, due to a serious fire the Temple was destroyed and they had to locate to another Temple, The House in Blackheath offered them temporary safety and that is how the 2nd Temple came about being consecrated. The Order eventually moved back up North and is based in Halifax where it has its own very special Temple. The Order has recently expanded and there are now Temples in The USA and India with another Temple in The UK, if people are interested in joining google the order it has a web presence and you can find out how to join. You do have to submit a paper on an esoteric subject and if approved you will be invited. The Order consists of 3 degrees; First, Passing and Second the ceremonies are very interesting and they also work The ceremonies of The Spring and Vernal Equinoxes

I believe it is centred on Bradford in the UK. Is that a connection to Robert Lomas, or just a coincidence? Which reminds me, I'm told that Robert Lomas' book "Uriel's Machine" is recommended reading in New South Wales lodges.

I believe it is centred on Bradford in the UK. Is that a connection to Robert Lomas, or just a coincidence? I have seen Lomas's excellent web site, the Web of Hiram, but there is no connection. I am sure I first read about the Bradford roots of the August Order of Light in the book Beyond The Craft, but it is also mentioned at Pietre-Stones, where Yasha Beresiner writes that it was also called the Oriental Order of Light. Wikipedia says of Bradford,Could that be a reason that the August Order of Light set up in Bradford? Did it perhaps have a large Asian population in the 1880s?
