Freemasonry has the LAW: if you want to join Freemasonry you have to ASK TO BE ONE. You'll even see that written on number registration plates.
In the UK it seems that people enquire at work. Sometimes at work, a Freemason might ask a colleague to see if he is curious.
There is a big difference after becoming a Master Mason. After that degree many degrees are STRICTLY INVITATION ONLY.
I have thought about conversing about the Royal & Select Masters at a Chapter Festive Board, to see if I was invited.
Any potential candidates to join, must be in the Mark and Holy Royal Arch.
However, I am starting to find R&SM slightly pointless....
SELECT MASTER is already in the Ancient & Accepted Rite of 33°, it is the 4° degree! The next degree is the ROYAL MASTER "One of the most enthralling pieces of ritual in Freemasonry".
The following degrees are MOST EXCELLENT MASTER and SUPER-EXCELLENT MASTER. Those degrees are after the Chair, and I don't think I will ever pass the Chair.
So in short, I don't think I'll try to join the R&SM.

I have been looking into some of those invitation only degrees, but I am not really wishing to sit in any chairs, which I guess would go against me.
