Hi all, In the absence of a tech support type sub-forum, I figured this is the best place for this. A few people have asked me recently how I do URL links that look pretty ( like this) instead of ugly (like this: www.google.com). The ugly URLs are easiest of all because you don't have to add any BBcode markup to them - you just enter a URL in and the forum software converts it into a clickable link automagically - similar to the way Outlook Express does it. If "BBcode" and "markup" are "Huh?" to you... I'm talking about what lets you bold, underline, italicise, and link stuff. The syntactically proper way of doing this - that is, without the forum software doing its conversion - is to enter (note I've placed a space in the commands so they're not converted): [/u rl] giving www.something.here.com/directory/directory/file.ext[/ul]To make it pretty, you simply do this: [/u rl] giving insert witty quote[/ul]If you're familiar with HTML, I'm simply making the URL an attribute of the tag, and replacing the marked-up area with other text.
Note that some fora are different in the way they handle BBcode. Some require double-quotes around the URL (viz. blah) and others (like this one and TFM, IIRC) don't. Others still will let you do HTML instead of BBcode (e.g. <a href="http: //blah...">stuff</a>) - but whatever floats your boat.

Thanks Matt, but it's a lot of hassle for a small result. To me a link is a link, and I am happier with the full url. I just copy and paste it to my Favourites in my browser if it is of interest to me.
Still this information may be of use to others. If enough of these technical and computer related hints etc arise then perhaps a separate section could be set up for that sort of thing?

Matt. You is da man! I was one of those "pestering" Matt for help in this matter and I am delighted for this explaination. I'm certain that even I will be able to make it work . Cheers Mate.

I still use correcting fluid to make alteration when typing, have to clean the screen quite often though. It's funny you should say that. One particular idiotic person in my first year high school class did just that while we were first learning how to use computers. (It was 1984, the computers were Microbees, and the software was WordStar . The look of shock on his face when he'd realised he'd put Liquid Paper on the screen was priceless. ;D

Thanks Matt.
After a few false starts I did manage to get it to work on this and other (non-masonic) fora, but for some reason it doesn't work on the other (tfm) forum. Any advice?

Leo
Different boards are set up in different ways, it may also be worth checking your user profile to see if bb code is enabled.

I hope I haven't offended? I should have highlighted that he was idiotic for many reasons - the Liquid Paper thing was merely incidental.

As bod says, they're all different because they're often different software: phpBB, ProBoards, ezBoards, etc, etc. That's what the Help button at the top or bottom is for.

Thanks Bod and Matt. This is a new area to me. And although I've been using a PC since about 1997 I have never really applied myself and taken the time to learn what one can learn. There's just so much and I dearly love to know more. Maybe I should invest in one of those "Pc for Dummies" books

I really like the Dummies guides, even tho I have been working in IT for ten years, and involved with 'pooters since the late 80's I still use my dummies guides when I need to look something up quickly.

They are surprisingly worthwhile, even to the experienced in the field. I have their Word 2000, Project Management and Yoga books [the latter also has a DVD option]. All surprisingly good. There ya go... endorsement from two IT specialists for Dummies books. Can't go wrong. Bod: When do you think they're going to send us the cheque?

Ok smarty-pants (Bod and Matt), as we're on the subject is there a web site where one can learn from the basics up?
