Welcome! Just curious about something. Being a son of the prairies I've always understood that minnehaha or "rapid waters" is either Dakota or Lakota. How did a lodge in East Lancashire end up being named after a character in Longfellow's "Song of Hiawatha"? I grew up in Minnehaha County, which makes it even more interesting...

An interesting discussion on what the presiding Master's powers really are. I encourage you all to carefully read your jurisdiction's, and your constituent lodge's, Constitutions and Bylaws. Many officers - both local and Grand line - are woefully ignorant of what their jurisdiction's organic documents actually authorize. Usually their assumption is that they have much MORE authority than they really do. Such assumed, but fictional, authority has led to the proliferation of much confusion, misunderstanding, and mythic "rules" that don't really exist! Study is always useful!

Looking around I can't help but be reminded of the comment that if God created us in his own image, he must be one funny looking duck.

...I have had a man who nearly joined a Masonic lodge ask me if “Masons in South Dakota wear their white hoods to lodge like the guys in Alabama?”... HEY!!!! Just to keep things absolutely clear, South Dakota is not in the southern tier of the USA. We're right under North Dakota which is on the Canadian border. Winters are cold, summers are hot, and we recognize every man for what's inside, not outside. We recognize Prince Hall and I've sat in lodge with brothers of every conceivable race, color, and creed. Racism has no place in Freemasonry. Period. Masonic harmony does not include acquiescing in the discordant voices of bigots. If they want to sing in the Masonic choir, they better learn the notes or get out.

Tuesday, June 9, 2009 7:30 p.m. CDT Resurgam Lodge #31 A.F. & A.M. 5th Avenue & Kimball Street Mitchell, SD USA
Stop by the last meeting of this Masonic Year. We'll be dark in July and August since it's so blasted hot upstairs in the lodge rooms, have officer's installation in the next 60 days or so, and be back to labor on the 2nd Tuesday in September.

Can you please provide a short (or long) list of these "get-to-know you" questions? Also, which questions should we be asking the person who is interviewing us? The reason I am asking is obviously because I have submitted an application to become a mason and would just like to prepare myself. Thank you. You might look at this - waynespies.com/mygrandlodge/structure/Guidelines_for_candidates.pdf - for a bit of insight into an interview by a Lodge committee.

Well...none of you came to visit on Saturday! That's a shame, too. We raised 4 new brothers, had a wonderful luncheon, and performed some darn good ritual work. Maybe next year, then? Or would you prefer to stop by for 1 degree some evening...LOL.

You ask how it's been so far?
COLD, damn cold. And the fire controls on my boiler quit on Sunday night...48 hours of manual start ups and shut downs at -13F got real old real fast. Takes a couple days to get the right, esoteric gas fittings out into the hinterlands!

I think that a common misconception of many non-USA Masons is that all American Masonry is the same. My jurisdiction uses the Lewis jewel as a token given to a son by his father after he is a Master Mason. We get ours from Dominion regalia, in Toronto. To my knowledge, only a handful of American Grand lodges do this. Good point. Each US Grand Lodge is independent.

It's January, cold as can be, clear and crisp and dark at night. Even way down here in SoDak we can enjoy the Northern Lights from time to time. I know the science...what other allusions are there from a mystical or esoteric point of view? And pardon my ignorance, but is there something similar for you folks in the Southern Hemisphere to enjoy?

Heard of the Lewis Jewel, but never seen one in 20 years or so. Regarding the "silver matchbox," what the heck is it? Sounds interesing.

I don't know about that, Windtimber, but the Russian Boxer Nikolay Valuev is a giant and saw-off Evander Holyfield last night! Wow, I haven't had the opportunity to watch a boxing match in years! Now that I think about it - and of course this is way off topic - whatever happened to boxing in the USA? Don't even see it on the obscure cable sports channels anymore... Oh, as you probably already know, Ole Rolvaag was a Norwegian/American writer who wrote, among other things, a novel about immigrant homesteaders. The title was "Giants in the Earth." Couldn't resist the fooling about a bit!

Never heard of it. We do have a committee of 3 brothers appointed to investigate each petition and interview the petitioner. I've done it many, many times and have never inquired into credit scores. Good men, and not so good men, can both have credit problems.
