I doubt alcohol (which i see at FBs) will help anyone reach that place of purity , rather the contrary. I dont think it has a place in this picture, because it feeds the animal side of us. Systems have forever changed, can this be changed to the better? now? S&F It depends on the master. Who is the master? The man or the bottle?

I too find myself agreeing yet again with Bill Mc Elligott, (this is becoming a trend), in that in moderation drinking alcohol is not a bad thing. As Bill has stated, Our Lord changed water into wine and indeed he celebrated the Last Supper with wine. St Paul is also mentioned by Bill. He was not a man given to levity nor a pleasure bound existence, but he advised Timothy to "Drink not water, but use a little wine for they stomach's sake"
As to drinking at the Festive Board and indeed the Festive Board itself. Whilst I feel that it has become invested with an importance over and above its due, and would not hurt for being trimmed down a bit, except for special occasions, to be more like the Scots "Harmony", in itself it does no harm and indeed for some elderly Brethren it may be the only decent social outing and meal they get each month. Personally, whilst I have enjoyed many Festive Boards in my time, and have been to a few stinkers it has to be said, I can take it or leave it. It is not what I am in Freemasonry for.
I once attended a Lodge where there was a problem with the electric power to the Kitchen and Secretary at short notice was able to arrange a meal in a large pub nearby. It was not Tyled so no Toasts nor Fire but a good time was had by all and some of the Brethren suggested that they have this type of informal meal after all their Meetings, save the Installation. I don't know if that suggestion was adopted, but have to say it was a very good meal with good company.

;DI never feel closer to God than after several good 'reds'. That's when we have chats. "now listen here God .. what..?" You've heard about communion wine? ;D
Tor - the middle road is a mighty fine road to take and is the way recommended by many highly revered Teachers. Jesus recommended that we change water into wine... a possible meaning being that we need to add 'spirit' to our watery nature to make it more effective. (And how much growth do you find in 'dry' areas?)
As other posters have noted... this is not referring to the abuse of alchohol that is something entirely different. I think if you go into your statistics you will see that there is probably much more disease caused by abuse of food than alchohol - and we need food to live.
I do believe that as we refine ourselves, in all ways, there will be a "natural" inclination to bypass alcohol, for we will be fired up by the spirit from within. The same goes for meat eating - but it must needs be a "natural" progression. Most of us are still on a path..
