At our Loi you come as you are. If i was coming straight from work then i will be wearing a suit, if i go home first then i change into jeans & a shirt, T shirt, or a sweat shirt. It's up to each indivdual as to what they wear. This is another reason why Freemasonry is not attracting new members, by being told to turn up at Loi wearing a whistle, or collar & tie, Being told by the tut, tut, brigade, not to wear casual, will we ever learn?
PS, Philip 6549, there is a section for advertising, events, not to take the thread to another dimension, and who is really interested in a matchbox, as long as the ceremony is done with feeling, it's not a competion. It's funny but when i read threads on this forum, and others it appears to me that certain people in the province of Warkwickshire think they are better ( elitist) than others? (pull pin, throw in room and wait for the explosion)

I went to a meeting the other week, and the lodge was doing a 3rd. The candiadte was between the JW & SW when the SW's Mobile phone went off, in front of the APGM, all were chuckling.
At a chapter meeting when i was H, the sojurners were either side of the candidate, and Z was doing his stuff, and the PSOJ WAS REPLYING, when i noticed that the PSOJ apron was slowly slipping down, others started to notice, and by the time the Psoj had noticed it was around his ankles, we had to stop as everyone burst out laughing ;D

If you would like more info regarding joining a lodge near Brixton then pm me, as i originally come from West Norwood which is only 4 miles from Brixton, and, as taylorsman has said Croydon is easy to get to and, me being a Surrey Mason, know many Freemasons that meet at Croydon. I also have friends that meet at Clerkenwall, London which is about 25 mins from Brixton. Let me know, as i'm sure that i will be able to help your friend. The Surrey website is www.surreymason.org.uk

Over a bottle of wine the other month with my wife, we was having the usual Friday evening chat, when she said to me that she over heard two chaps at work talking about who gets promotion in the company. (EDF Energy) formally, Seeboard, LEB, & Eastern Electricity. Well one of the chaps came over to my wife and said, (wrong move) mr .......... only got that promotion because he is a mason! Well, i give her credit where credit is due, and she said if thats the case then my husband would be higher up than he is now. The bloke said, how is that? she said, ' because my Husband is a mason' The bloke went white as a ghost, and said, he was only joking, and she said, your just ignorant and, get your facts right!!!!! The funny thing is, since then, he has asked her what Freemasonry is all about!!!!.

Some good points. I think after the ceremony a quick drink in the bar while the wine is being ordered. A prompt finish at the festive board, and those that want a late drink can then retire to the bar. At my next chapter meeting the start time is 5.00 (normally 4.30) Festive board 7.00 ( normally 7.15/7.30) so a finish for 9.00, or before. Another observation and in my view time wasting, is the clearing up of the Tea/coffee cups by the staff before the official toasting, this can take up to 10 mins. What about not having coffee/tea? as there are a few that don't bother to have a cup, and most gets wasted?
I think the ordering of wine before the ceremony is a good idea, and maybe that could be a job for the stewards? We have a commitee meeting in my lodge next Monday, and one of the items i will be putting forward is start times. 1st5.30/ 5.45, 2nd 6.00, 3rd 5.00/5.15, Installation 4.30/5.00 . One drink in the bar before the meal, is a possibility, but will just have to see! as my lodge likes a half or two before the meal.
One of the other lodges i belong to, start all of their meetings at 6.00 irrespective of what degree they are working, including installation. On the summons there are only on average 6 items, and it seems to work, as we are normally finished by 9.30.

Staffs, thanks for a great evening, the work in the temple was excellent, as was the company of all of the forumites, and all of the members of your lodge. The sussex workings that your lodge do was slightly different to most other sussex lodges that i have been to, and that is the beauty of visting.always something different. I'm glad that you have thought about the 3rd, as it still sticks in my mind after all of these years, i'm sure we can chat about it over a few beers, maybe after the shoot on the 24th. There were some dodgy voices at the festive board but, a nice touch for the visitors, keep it going. The food was good, and i had no problems, and the conversation was excellent, i thought Bill might have cracked open the bottle of red! Lee once again thanks for a great night, pass on my thanks to all at your Lodge, especialy those that assisted in the ceremony, and to all of those that attended from this forum, a great bunch of chaps, regards Mike. PS The next big ceremony to attend, when it happens, is Leo's initiation. ;D

Steve, i agree with what you say. I'm all for recognition, but to many times i have heard the moans & groans of not receiving the 'Right' Promotion! All these comments have lead me to peruse my 2004 provincial handbook, to see exactly what goes on. For everyones info, (and most of you will know this) you qualify for honours as soon as you come out of the chair of King Solomon. Glancing through the pages there are a few who have gained honours after 3 years out of the chair, i'm sure for the right reasons?
Talking to one who has an active rank, he told me he made noises in the right places!! (only out of the chair 3 years) Another brother gained Grand Lodge Officer rank, by working at Great Queen Street!!! But i'm sure that gaining an Honour, is an Honour Confered.
At the end of the day it should be a privilage to receive an honour, not expected.

Taylorsman, fair comment, i am now trying to introduce something different into Chapter, and we are having a lecture in May, it's a start, and something to tax the mind. Stewart, hopefully you will join a lodge and get an even better understanding, than you have now, regards Mike.

Interesting reading. Our Loi meets every Monday except Bank Hols, Sept to May. ( not through Christmas) we have and still ask about different aspects of Freemasonry, when at Loi. We have started to learn more about the tracing boards. Stewart E, before you comment on UGLE, I suggest that you look at other Grand Lodges, and how they opporate, before you, Keep making comments on how UGLE works, no ones perfect! Maybe, and just maybe, in time a lodge could be formed from this forum, with research one of the main aims? One of the other lodges i belong to, only meet once before a meeting!!!! and thats hard. There is an Loi that meets near me in Sussex in the summer months, fortnightly to help brethern, even from different provinces. We do pay £1 subs, but have just made the decision to include them in the annual subs, because of those that pay for regular attendance, are penalised. May be one Loi a month couls be dedicated to other aspects of Freemasonry?
